Composite doors explained

What is a composite door?

Composite doors are a strong front-door route for Romford and Essex homes where the entrance needs better security, insulation, colour choice, and kerb appeal than an older uPVC or timber door. Unlike a hollow uPVC door, a composite door has a high-density insulating core wrapped in a tough glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) skin, making it more rigid, thermally efficient, and resistant to warping or fading. A premium GRiPCORE core upgrade adds horizontal timber plinths and aluminium reinforcement for extra rigidity. At Cii Double Glazing, we narrow the door style, glass, colour, frame, threshold, handle, letterplate, knocker, and number around the house before confirming a survey-led written quote.

Glass & lead

Leaded glass and decorative options

The leaded-light look you see on traditional windows, such as diamond lead, square lead, and Georgian bar, can be carried into your door’s glazed panel and matched across the rest of the house. We show the full range of obscure and decorative glass at survey.

Guide pricing

What affects the price of a composite door

Composite doors are quoted from a survey rather than one fixed price, because the cost follows the choices you make. These are the main things we price around.

From £999 per door

Door style

A solid slab is the simplest. Glazed, decorative, and designer panel styles add glass and detailing.

Glass and lead

Clear glass is standard. Obscure, decorative, bevelled, and leaded designs change the glazed cassette price.

Colour

Nine standard colours are included. Premium colours, RAL, Farrow & Ball, and dual colour inside and out cost more.

Sidelights and toplights

Glazed side panels or a toplight above the door widen the frame and add extra glazed units.

Frame and threshold

Frame colour and a low or level-access threshold instead of a standard one affect the price.

Hardware and security

Handle, letterplate, knocker, spyhole, and number finish, plus any TS007 or Secured by Design cylinder upgrade.

Removal and making good

Taking out the old frame and tidying the brick or plaster reveal where the opening needs it.

One door or two

A single door starts from £999. A front-and-back package is usually better value than two doors bought separately.

Because these choices vary house to house, the final price is confirmed at a free survey with a fixed written quote, not a fixed online price. A front-and-back door package is usually better value than two doors bought separately.

Product fit

A fitted front door choice built around the whole house

A fitted composite front door should look like it belongs to the house, not like it was picked in isolation. For Romford and Essex homes we start with the brickwork, windows, porch, threshold, and frame colour, then narrow the door style, glass, hardware, and colour around that.

Best fit for

  • Front entrances where colour, glass, and hardware should lift the whole elevation
  • Homes replacing an older uPVC or timber front door with something more substantial
  • Buyers who want a wider choice of traditional, modern, and glazed panel styles

Consider another option when

  • Lowest replacement cost matters more than finish choice
  • The opening is a simple rear or side entrance with limited visibility
  • You want a large glazed garden opening rather than an entrance door

What we check on survey

  • We compare door colour against brickwork, render, windows, porch, and roofline.
  • We check frame colour, threshold, hinges, letterplate, handle, knocker, and glass together.
  • We confirm opening size, hinge side, access, and whether sidelights or toplights should stay or change.

Optional Upgrade

Integral blinds for glazed side panels and door glass

Composite doors are usually led by style, colour, and security, but some entrances include large glazed side panels or door glass. Integral blinds can add privacy without hiding the door design behind curtains or loose blinds.

Glazed entrance door with an integral blind in the glass

Privacy around entrance glazing

Most relevant where the front or side entrance includes larger glazed sections.

Useful on composite door projects when

  • The design includes sidelights or larger glazed panels
  • The hallway is overlooked from the street
  • You want privacy without covering the chosen door style

Blind types we can discuss

Magnetic integral blinds

A slim magnetic slider raises, lowers, and tilts the blind inside the sealed glass unit.

Electric integral blinds

Remote operation suits larger panes, harder-to-reach glass, and cleaner contemporary rooms.

What we check

  • Panel size, glass weight, and unit depth
  • Traffic-door position, handles, and threshold detail
  • Whether the blind layout should cover every pane or only selected panels

We only recommend this where the glazing size and door design make the upgrade useful; many composite doors are better handled with decorative or obscure glass.

How It Works

From Survey to Sign-off

Step 1

Survey & door check

We measure the existing frame and opening, check the threshold, reveal, and how the door is hung, then talk through the style, colour, glazing, and hardware that suit the front of your home.

Step 2

Made to measure

Your composite door is built to the measured size: the chosen slab and colour, the decorative or obscure glass, the frame, and the letterplate, handle, knocker, and spyhole finishes are all locked together before manufacture.

Step 3

Install & sign-off

Our Cii team fits the door and frame, adjusts the slab so it closes and locks cleanly, seals and weatherproofs the opening, and checks the multi-point locking at handover. Assure certification and the Cii 10-year guarantee follow on completion.

Thoroughly recommend this company. From the first call I was given really helpful advice and fitters came out the next day. The fitter was very knowledgeable and helpful, completed the job, and gave good advice on other areas we needed looking at. Will definitely use again and have no hesitation recommending them to friends and family.
